VW shows off Scirocco Study R in Bologna

Volkswagen's new Scirocco is rapidly becoming a popular canvas for customizing, and Wolfsburg itself is getting into the act. The Bologna Motor Show has been graced with the Scirocco Study R, which could be a preview of a production version called the Scirocco R20T. The Study R is a derivation of the ideas laid down by the GT24 race concept, with a sneery front end and a wing out back. The Study R is more understated in white with subdued striping, red mirrors and a nostriled hood. Power is provided by a 2.0 liter TFSI engine that twirls the cogs in a six-speed DSG gearbox. Suspension and braking systems have also been tweaked to deliver on the image's sporty promise, and a less restrictive exhaust offers some bark to underscore the bite. With the death of the R32, Volkswagen might bring the R20T to the North American market, and if it's anything like the Study R, we'll be saying R-thirty-who?

Jazz is Cute

SOME cars sell because they are practical. Some because they are affordable, while others sell because they reek of adrenalin.

And there are also a few which top the list because they, errr... look cute.

Cute cars sell. Cars have moved on to become fashion icons and there is no other place than Japan to prove this.

2008 Ssyang Yong C200

The SsangYong C200 is quite unlike anything seen from SsangYong before. The C200 is a modern, contemporary urban passenger car with styling by Giugiaro’s ItalDesign in Italy. It is similar in size to a Toyota RAV4, a Honda CRV and a Nissan Qashqai and with a 2,640mm wheelbase, is slightly longer than a VW Tiguan.

Aston Martin DB9

SEEING the DB9 up close and knowing that we were going to drive it gave us tingly feelings of anticipation and excitement.

After all, the Aston Martin marque has been associated with the glamour of fictional British secret agent James Bond feature films for more than four decades.

The DB9, which begun sales four years ago, remains among the most iconic super cars in the world today and marked the start of a new successful era for Aston Martin which returned to British hands last year after Ford sold the company to a consortium led by David Richards, the head of motorsport firm Prodrive.

The DB9 was the first car to be hand-made at the Aston Martin factory in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Even the new DBS, the present car of choice for the world’s most famous secret agent, is based on the DB9.

The DB9 is offered either as a two-door coupe or convertible (Volante) with 2+2 seating, although only small children can fit properly into the rear seats.

It is a beautiful car. Seen in the flesh, the low-slung DB9 exudes a subtly imposing visage that inevitably turned heads wherever we drove in Singapore.

The long and low bonnet, marvellously proportioned body and wide rear end combined for a dynamic yet seductive exterior presence that promised us rarefied thrills.

“Like other Aston Martin cars, the DB9 is a great vehicle for business, formal occasions or long highway drives,” said Aston Martin Lagonda (S.E.A.) Pte Ltd managing director Derek McCully.

The plush leather upholstery and premium wood trim in the cabin were everything expected from a luxurious British sporting grand tourer.

Aluminium dials and chromed buttons provided a functional and businesslike feel.

There is no gear stick, and selecting driving modes are done via the clearly marked P, R, N and D buttons on the centre console.

We could have changed gears via the magnesium alloy paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, but there was really not much point to it as we found ourselves constantly running out of road while doing short and fantastically quick sprints in the Tuas Basin Link under draconian speed restrictions.

Gear shifts were seamless and thanks to its V12 engine, the DB9 swiftly accelerated to high speeds with a hard step on the accelerator pedal and an exhilarating roar of power.

Still, at cruising speeds, the engine note settled down a few notches to become an unobtrusive throb.

For a car of its size (4,710mm in length, 1,875m in width, 1,270mm in height), its swift acceleration was also aided by its 1,800kg kerb weight which is largely due to an aluminium bonded body as well as lightweight composite panels.

Aston Martin says the DB9 has a top speed of 306km/h and can do the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.8 seconds.

The servotronic steering provided adequate road feedback while the front and rear independent aluminium double wishbones suspension set-up felt on the firm side of comfort.

The roads in Tuas Basin Link were well-maintained and the DB9 did not need to smother the tarmac jinks we usually encounter in the Klang Valley.

Shod with 19-inch wheels, the DB9, with a 50:50 weight distribution, proved to be agile and cornered with verve in the brief periods when we drove it spiritedly.

Despite the lack of a road environment where we could handle the DB9 in the manner a supercar is meant to be driven, our time spent with the car provided us with convincing glimpses of what an Aston Martin promises - power, beauty and soul.

Also, the DB9 represents fair value for money, especially when you consider that the new DBS is selling for S1,035,000 OTR w/o COE (certificate of entitlement) and insurance.

Jing Yue

Youngman Automobile’s Europestar brand has just launched its second offering in the China market, the Europestar Jingyue, also called the Europestar Persona. It debuts at the 2008 Guangzhou Auto Show this week. It’s pretty much our Persona with Europestar badges, powered by the 1.6 liter Campro engine. No specs have been revealed so far.

According to Chinese publication northeast, Lotus is working with Youngman to develop more Europestar models which include a larger car, an SUV and an MPV.

Look for more shots of the Europestar Jingyue after the jump, though they aren’t much other than Proton product photos with the Europestar badge photoshopped on. Even the product photo of the left hand drive interior was just flipped horizontally as you can see from the gear shifter area - the D, 3, 2 and L are flipped.

Volvo Trucks

Ford Motor Co has announced that it is considering selling its Volvo Cars marque, but a review of its current options would take several months to complete. Volvo itself is currently undergoing a restructuring plan under its new CEO Stephen Odell.

It was previously speculated that the Swedish government may be interested, but what about Volvo (the industrial group whose businesses include making Volvo trucks) themselves? Volvo sold Volvo Cars to Ford in 1999. But it seems that they’re not interested in revisiting the past. They’ve come out and said that they “absolutely do not want to buy Volvo Cars”, quoted verbatim from their chairman Finn Johnsson in a report from Swedish financial daily Dagens Industri.

However Volvo has stated they would gladly gladly finance joint projects such as sponsor projects or R&D projects, and could consider being part of various consortiums without actually being the main owner.

They’ve also publicly opposed calls for the Swedish government to take over Volvo because according to them, the government knows nothing about the car industry and Volvo needs a owner that has the ability to work on increasing sales and cooperate with suppliers on components and development.

BMW M3 Sedan Review, Pictures, Test Drive

ONE might get attracted to the swoopy lines of a coupe, but when you need to put your cash down, practicality butts in and you realise a four-door is more practical.

Take the BMW E90 M3 for instance. The company launched the new M3 in the shape of a coupe, later a convertible and then a sedan was introduced.

We have actually driven all three versions - the M3 Coupe at Ascari during its launch, then the M3 Convertible in Munich and now, the M3 Sedan in Malaysia.

Say what you want to say but we think the Sedan is the best of all three. Practicality aside, the four-door version seems to rob our mind and soul with its full-fledge performance.

New Civic's front fascia received cosmetic treatment to the grille, lower bumper-air dam sections, new fog lamp designs.

Chevrolet Girl

This video shows a Chinese woman (supposedly in Shanghai) arguing with a tow truck driver, who appears to want to tow her Chevrolet Captiva away for illegally parking or some kind of offense or another.

She got fed up of arguing and just drove her Captiva away, still attached to the tow truck! Probably a testament to the torque a Captiva has, especially the turbodiesel version. This is probably a viral advertisement of some sort, but still quite a smart one.

Porsche Panamera four-door grand touring sports car

NOT enough with their SUV, Porsche continues to explore newer market with the Panamera, a car which has popped up in the web pages for the past 30 years.

Combining Porsche's traditional handling dynamics and the practicality of a four-door vehicle, the Panamera will come with a range of V6 and V8 engines, with output figures running from 300hp up to 500hp (Cayenne Turbo's engine we assume).

Standard will be rear-wheel drive configuration but an all-wheel-drive version can also be had. Like the Cayenne, the Panamera has the engine up front.

Expect to see the car being launched soon.

2009 Lexus IS Facelift

The facelifted 2009 Lexus IS range have been unveiled in the UK this week (though at first sight I cannot tell what on earth has changed with the design), and it is now more accessible with the cheapest model (which is the IS 220d SE) costing £22,490. The entire range has also got price slashes, some by more than £1,000. This is probably an effort to keep up sales volumes in these tough times.

The IS 220d is now more environmentally friendly, with a small drop in CO2 emissions from 168g/km to 163g/km. In the UK, this means it moves down a band for vehicle excise duty from E to D. The owner of a facelifted IS 220d will save £25 a year on his road fund license and reduces the Benefit in Kind (BIK) rate for company car tax calculation to 23 per cent.

Other changes include VDIM as standard on all models, and folding rear headrests. A Satnav option is available for £1,825 on SE and SE-I models which include Europe GPS maps, a 7 inch 640×480 LCD display with touch screen operation, Bluetooth hands-free, a rear parking video feed monitor and a 13-speaker audio system with an in-dash 6-CD changer. This pack can be upgraded to a Multimedia Pack on the SE-L for £2,710 which includes the same stuff but adds a 14-speaker Mark Levinson system with a 6-DVD changer.

BMW Performance Kit for 3 Series

A lot of BMW 3-Series owners are probably waiting for this - a new BMW Performance range from BMW which joins the current line-up consisting of the tii-morphing 1-Series BMW Performance kit and the M6’s kit. With the amount of 3-Series and 3-Series M Sport models on Malaysian roads, especially with the 320i also getting the M Sport kit now, you may start to feel a little jaded with the 3, but now we have BMW Performance parts to spice it up!

I’m not sure how the set up will be in Malaysia, but in Europe all BMW Performance products are covered by BMW’s full warranty and are sold by BMW dealers. BMW has released a teaser video of what the 3-Series will get, and you can watch it after the jump.

From what we can see - a new front bumper with a really wide central air intake, an M3-ish diffuser-design rear bumper (tailpipe only one on side though), carbon fiber wing mirrors, and you can probably expect a carbon fiber rear lip as well as air intake, exhaust, seats, brake, struts and suspension upgrades that take the car one level above the kit you get with the M Sport.

The BMW Performance colour is yellow - so the BMW Performance springs and the lovely 6-pot brake calipers will be painted in that colour. The range even has its own alloy wheels which comes in either 18 inch or 19 inch sizes.

Nissan GTR, minor update for 2009

While we wait patiently for the even faster GT-R V-Spec to roll out of Nissan’s garages, they’ve gone ahead and performed a few minor updates on the “baseline” GT-R. New for the 2009 model year is an extra 5 PS from the engine, bringing the peak power up to 485 PS. It is however more economical, rated at 8.5km/l instead of the previous 8.2km/l. You can also go further per tank of fuel as the fuel tank size has been increased from 71 liters to 73.8 liters. The white paint is now a new shade called Storm White. Other minor changes include the Brembo brake calipers in front losing their Brembo logo and replaced with Nissan wordings, and the removal of the front license plate holder base.

Artega GT

The Artega GT is a German-born competitor to the Porsche Cayman S that weighs only 1,100kg (though over 10k UK pounds more expensive than the Cayman S for a weight advantage of 250kg) thanks to an aluminium spaceframe and a carbon composite bodyshell.

With that kind of weight it’s really not necessary for oversized engines to be plonked into the mid-mounted engine bay. All that’s needed is the Volkswagen Group’s 3.6 liter FSI V6 engine producing a standard 296 horsepower to give the car a sub-5 second 0 to 100km/h acceleration time. This engine is mated to the smooth and quick-shifting 6-speed DSG transmission from BorgWarner.

The 2-seater mid-enginened sports car is 3,950mm long, 1,180mm tall and 1,880mm wide and was styled by Henrik Fisker.
